Strawberries

I can remember spending time out on my Grandpa's farm as a kid. Whether it was time to plow, time to plant, time to weed or time to harvest there was always something to be done. Grandpa always had a way of making sure that everyone had a job to do. And every job big and small was important. (at least in his eyes)

Thinking of those days on the farm I can see God's hand teaching so many lessons. I can remember as a young boy around 4 or 5 years old planting rows of strawberries in a freshly plowed field. I got to take a hand shovel and dig a small hole. One of my sisters would put the seeds in the hole and my other sister would cover the seeds. We would the water the row of planted seeds.

I remember standing there looking at the row. A stick at both ends marked Strawberries. I waited. I wanted to see that first plant burst through the ground but it didn't happen that day. I have to admit I was a little disappointed.

A few weeks later, we were about to pull into the farm we I looked out the window and saw little bits of green all around the strawberry rows. I was excited. It was time for strawberries.

When we got out into the field Grandpa showed me that there wasn't just strawberries but that there were weeds sprouting out too. He explained that the weeds will grow up and croak out the strawberries unless someone who cares about the strawberries will carefully pick the weeds so that the strawberries can grow big a juicy. So it was back to work.

After the weeding was done I stood and looked at the neat little row going down the field. I could almost taste those strawberries now. But at last we had to go home and still no strawberries to eat.

In time those plants grew bigger and stronger until one day we pulled into the farm and Grandpa walked up to the car and as we piled out he handed each of us a basket. A we walked out to the field Grandpa told me it was time to pick some strawberries. He showed me the difference between a fully ripe strawberry and an immature strawberry and with a smile he whispered to me, "try not to eat more than you put in the basket."

This memory makes me think about how God acts in my life. He desires my life to produce plump, ripe fruit, strawberries if you will. But before these strawberries are ready there is a lot of work to be done. The field of our lives will have to be plowed, rocks and sticks and trash will need removed. Some holes may have to be dug and filled with the seed of God's word. We will have to sit in the heat of the sun and be drenched by the rains and battered by the wind. The weeds of our sin must be rooted out and removed.

And there sets God at the end of the row that is your life, waiting to taste the freshest, plumpest, reddest, sweetest strawberries ever seen.

1 Corinthians 3:6-9 says, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

What kind of field will you be?

Weakness

Many times as Christ followers we seem to run from our weakness. We only want to do what we are good at or what we find lingering in our comfort zone. This seems counter productive to me. Where is the faith in that?

In 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 it says, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

In this passage God tells us that He wants to use the weak things to prove Himself. So it seems only logical that God would call us to step out of our comfort zones in order to show His greatness through us. Have you ever considered the victory you have in your weakness?

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 says, To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Did you see that Paul says that God allows him to struggle because it is in that very weakness where God will make Paul strong.

Satan wants to remind you of your weakness. He wants you to know that you just aren't good enough, that you can't live this Christian life. That you will stumble along the way and you are going to fall.

And God responds, When your are at your weakest, when you realize that you don't have the strength to stand then," I will stand" says the LORD. His strength will be your strength, His joy will be your joy.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

Lets boast in our weakness, so that God's strength will reign in us.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

The Details

Today I spoke with a friend of mine who felt God's calling to go overseas for Christ. He was so excited about what God wanted him to do that he jumped in with both feet without looking to God for all the details. It became what he was doing not what God was going to do through him.

It seems that so often we get caught up in the big picture that we lose site of the details needed to reach that goal. A lot of times as Christians we feel God is only interested in the big things, but this isn't true. Look at Exodus 25-28. God is calling the people to build the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, the emblems used in worship and the Garments of the priests.

God sets out so much detail that some are forced to ask, "why does that mater?"

For example, in Exodus 25:10 God says you are going to build an Ark. Here are the details from this verse: acacia wood (not just wood but a type use for luxury furniture) It must be an exact height, length and width (2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide and 1.5 cubits high - a natural cubit is about 45 cm or 18 inches.) In the following verses God continues to add one detail after another until the result is all God's design not ours.

How much simpler would life be if we let God be in charge of the details?

Living In Victory

So often believers in Jesus get caught up in this lie that we can't make a difference in this world we live in. In 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 the Bible declares that we already have victory through Christ Jesus. So what is victory? Dictionary.com defines victory as: "1. a success or triumph over an enemy in battle or war"

We have an enemy, the devil, who goes around like a lion seeking those that he can devour. If you ever study lions you will realize that they attack the weak and the young. If we as the children of God walk around with a defeated attitude we become spiritually weak and are more vulnerable to Satan's attacks.

So how do we turn this around?

I believe the answered in Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The 1st key to Victorious living is realize in who's power you live! (vs 10-11)
"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." ~1 John 4:4

The 2nd key is to realize who you are fighting against. (vs. 12)
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." ~1 Peter 5:8

The 3rd key is be prepared! (vs. 13-18)
"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction." ~2 Timothy 4:2

Finally brothers and sisters: PRAY! PRAY! and PRAY some more!!!! (vs. 18)
"I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing." ~1 Timothy 2:8
